Hi, I'm Gemma...

Artist, Creative, North Coast enthusiast, and Mum to two teenagers, Olivia and Jack. I’ve been married to John for 22 years, and together we’ve built a life around family, creativity, and running businesses side by side.

My creative journey actually started long before I picked up a paintbrush.

In 2012, while working as a wedding planner, I began baking and designing cakes from our kitchen, and what started as a small side project quickly became Gemma’s Cakes, a full-time wedding cake business.

Four months after I took the leap, John joined me as my business partner (and baker, and accounts manager!), and for nearly a decade and a half we’ve had the privilege of designing edible art for hundreds of couples across Northern Ireland.

Bringing Community Into Business

In 2023, after years of navigating business life ourselves, I felt called to help other small business owners. That’s when I founded The Creative Business Club, an online group coaching membership and mentoring space created to remove loneliness, add structure and systems, and support female entrepreneurs in building businesses they love. I still run this membership today alongside my 1:1 coaching programmes.

Back in 2021 I figured if I could design wedding cakes surely I could paint on a canvas. So I bought a canvas and painted Whitepark Bay in Acrylics. That was the start of it.

It's remained a hobby while I've worked on my other projects.

Until this year, 2025. This is the year I decided it was time for change.

Change...

And now, as we prepare to retire from wedding cakes at the end of 2026, I’m stepping into my next creative chapter, Gemma Overend Art.

Today I create watercolour pieces inspired by this beautiful country, Northern Ireland and meaningful commissions of homes and buildings that hold stories for the people who love them. There is something incredibly special about turning someone’s memories into art, and it’s a privilege I don't take for granted.

When I'm not painting, you'll usually find me...

• walking the coast and gathering inspo'

• sharing a good glass of red with friends

• hosting family/friends in our home

• or cheering on my teens as they navigate the world
